Frances Gil founded Mas d'en Gil in the 19th century in Priorat. In 1931 the estate passed to the Barril family who renamed it Masia Barril and made a groundbreaking decision to start bottling their own wines. In 1998 the Rovira Carbonell family bought the estate and renamed it Mas d'en Gil, honoring the original founders. Today Pere Rovira runs the estate with the help of his daughter, Marta Rovira Carbonell (who introduced organic farming to the vineyards). Today, Mas d'en Gil covers 125 hectares of land in the southern part of Priorat. The vines (mostly Garnatxa and Carinyena with some Garnatxa Blanca) are planted in five valleys on steeply sloping, slate-based (llicorella) hillsides.
